Exploring unscheduled care at night: the night owls project

This project presents an exciting opportunity to complete a fully funded, full-time one year Masters by Research. The starting date is 31st March 2021.
Needing assistance or worrying about accessing care overnight is a key reason people enter residential care. Ynys Mon local authority have worked with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust to develop the Night Owls service. This service provides both scheduled and unscheduled care to Ynys Mon residents overnight. The Night Owls service is innovative and no directly comparable service exists in North Wales.
The project will take a mixed methods approach and will involve collecting data from individuals who have received unscheduled (i.e. unplanned) visits from the Night Owls service. It will involve:
Conducting a scoping review of research undertaken in the last five years
Analysing data routinely collected by the Night Owls service
Telephone interviews with older adults who have received one or more unscheduled visits from the Night Owls service and conducting a thematic analysis of the interview data
Developing a questionnaire tool for the Night Owls service to collect future satisfaction and outcomes data
Conducting a small pilot of this questionnaire tool to ascertain its usability and acceptability
Holding a workshop (potentially via videoconference) with the Night Owls partner organisations at the end of the study to share the findings and to consider the next steps for researching and evaluating the service
The full time 1 year studentship (theses must be submitted a maximum of 3 months after the funded one year study period) includes a tax-free maintenance stipend of £11,246 for 12 months, with full-time fees paid and additional allowances. A requirement of the studentship is a 30-day placement with the partner company (Ynys Mon Local Authority), during the period of the project. The achievement of a Postgraduate Skills Development Award (PSDA) is compulsory for each KESS scholar.
Qualifications and experience requirements for successful applicant. The prospective applicant should have a minimum of a 1st or good 2:1 in a relevant degree and be available to take up the studentship on the 31st March 2021. It is desirable that he/she can communicate effectively though the mediums of both Welsh and English. A requirement of the post is that the person apply for DBS clearance as the research involves working with vulnerable adults.
The student will be based in the School of Healthcare Sciences at Bangor University, which offers a dynamic and exciting research environment. He or she will also work closely with Rachel Williams and Brian Jones as well as other members of Ynys Mon Local Authority.
