Optimising Safety and Quality in Aged Care

As experienced in many countries, Australia’s population is ageing.  In Australia the number of older persons 65 years and over  is projected to increase from 14% in 2012 to 19% in 2031 and 25% by 2061, with the proportion 85 years and over projected to increase from 1.8% of the population in 2012 to approximately 6% in 2061. Australia’s ageing population has prompted the need to focus attention on how health care is delivered to this group.


In this seminar Dr Helen Rawson will present these aspects of her research that focuses on the delivery of quality care for older people in Australia:

• The Trifocal Model of Care - translating knowledge to optimise quality and safety in residential aged care.

• Engaging family members in, and building their understanding of, residential aged care: adaption of the Tri-focal Model of Care education program.

• Nursing care of the older person in the emergency department: exploring how emergency nurses are able to deliver care to the increasing number of older patients presenting to emergency departments. 

• Nursing roles and strategies in end-of-life decision making involving older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds admitted to Victorian hospitals for end-of-life care.

Biography – Dr Helen Rawson, PhD MSC BSC (HONS) RN MACN

Dr Helen Rawson is a Registered Nurse and a Research Fellow in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Deakin University, Geelong, Australia and at the Centre for Nursing Research – Deakin University and Monash Health Partnership, Melbourne Australia. In this partnership, Helen supports collaboration between Monash Health, Deakin University and other industry partners. Originally undertaking her nursing degree in London, Helen has a passion for the delivery of safe and quality care for older people in acute, subacute and residential care settings and this is demonstrated in her research and teaching activities. Her current research is focused on health and wellbeing outcomes for older people in acute and residential care. Helen is also interested in the care of older people from culturally and linguistically diverse groups. Helen teaches in the undergraduate nursing programme at Deakin University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, and is specifically involved in the subject The Older Person and Supportive Care. Helen is keen to ensure that nursing graduates understands the importance of delivering safe high quality care to older people in a supportive and culturally appropriate way that engages the older person and their family/carer. Helen also supervises higher degree research students. As a registered nurse Helen has extensive experience in working with older people in the acute and residential care settings and was on a steering committee for a project that explored the experience of ageing in Australia today. Helen undertakes many professional activities related to the older person and research, including being a member of the executive committee for the Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG), Victoria Division, and serves as a member of the Deakin University, Faculty of Health, Human Ethics Research Advisory Group and also serves as a member of Monash Health’s Human Research Ethics Committee.
